My name is Caleb Basset and I'm a confessional Lutheran pastor serving the flock at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Fallbrook, CA. Affiliated with the WELS, I am a product of WELS worker training schools. I graduated from Luther Preparatory School (Watertown, WI) in 2001, from Martin Luther College (New Ulm, MN) in 2006, and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (Mequon, WI) in 2010. I pursue interests in theology, worship, technology, photography, filmmaking, and practical pastoral ministry.
I maintain this website mainly as a home for my personal writing. Writing is the best way to sharpen your own thinking, so I write as frequenlty as possible about topics that are important to me and my ministry. I also share information about my projects on this site.
To assist students with preparing for their confirmation examination at St. Stephen Lutheran Church I prepared this set of audio recordings. The questions are divided into sections—roughly by topic. I recorded myself reading each question and then speaking the answer. Auditory learners will find memorization of answers to be easier using these recordings.
I am a member of the Executive Committee of the WELS Hymnal Project and serve as chairman of the Technology subcommittee. The WELS Hymnal Project is preparing the next generation of Lutheran hymnal for use in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The hymnal is scheduled to be released by 2024.
Opus 54 is a documentary film by Caleb Bassett and Ian Welch that covers the practice of designing and building tracker-action pipe organs. The film looks at this process through the lens of a particular organ, Martin Ott Opus 54 at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. Produced over a two-year span (2008-2010), this 90-minute documentary fulfilled the requirements of the senior Church History course at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. The film has also been used by a variety of Lutheran congregation as an educational tool in schools and on organ committees. DVDs are availble for purchase on Amazon.com, and the project's website includes more information about the film, as well as additional short features.
